Exploring Community Craft: The Brookhaven Arts Festival

Brookhaven Arts FestivalThe Brookhaven Arts Festival located in Brookhaven, Georgia, has been the premier art festival since 2004.  Situated about 3 miles inside the I-285 corridor and just north of Buckhead, this exciting annual event features a juried show of 125-150 artists from across the nation.  In 2015, a group of local artists, business owners and community members, took the reins of the Brookhaven Arts Festival, after the dissolution of the Brookhaven Arts Alliance. They are committed to providing an enjoyable, fulfilling and profitable experience for artists and the Brookhaven community, while enhancing art appreciation, art education, and community spirit.

The festival considers Art Appreciation as the knowledge and understanding of the universal and timeless qualities that identify all great art. The more one appreciates and understands the art of different eras, movements, styles and techniques, the better one can develop, evaluate and improve their own artwork. Visual arts education is understood as the area of learning that is based upon only the kind of art that one can see, visual arts—drawing, painting, sculpture, and design in jewelry, pottery, weaving, fabrics, etc. and design applied to more practical fields such as commercial graphics and home furnishings. Community spirit can easily be exemplified by the groups of people working together to help improve the Brookhaven community. Community spirit is recognized as local people working together for a mutually positive and pleasurable result.

The Arts Festival is now in its 11th year of operation and attracts between 10,000 and 12,000 visitors from around the region. It is produced with input of local artists from the Brookhaven Community Foundation; a non-profit organization which gives back to those in need.  Additionally, this year’s board of directors are recognized for their dedication and hard work to make the 11th Annual Brookhaven Arts Festival one of the best events in the region! The Brookhaven Arts Festival website lists names of board members, who are as follows: Kelly Marsh, Greg Barner, Joe Bickley, Ida Beth Barner, and Megan Brown.
